The General Medical Council is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. It is dedicated to protecting patients across the United Kingdom by ensuring high standards of medical education and practice. It does this by working with doctors, government health departments, employers, medical educators and patient groups. As part of the its drive to be a more agile, confident and connected regulator, the GMC is seeking to recruit to a key and influential role which sits at the heart of the Registration and Revalidation Directorate, which is responsible for two of the GMC’s core statutory functions, both of which are governed by a complex framework; maintaining the register of doctors and conducting a revalidation programme in which all licensed doctors must periodically demonstrate that they remain up to date and fit to practise.

The work of the directorate takes place in the context of a rapidly changing external political, social and legislative environment and, as part of the directorate’s Senior Management Team, the Assistant Director Policy, Information and Change will work with colleagues across the GMC and with a broad range of external stakeholders, to lead the development of the directorates’ legislative and policy approach across all functions and its change projects. In particular, you will be responsible for the policy work which underpins the directorate’s functions and for programmes to implement improvement and change in the work of the directorate and its systems.

The post holder will have a successful and strong track record in a senior role within a challenging medical, regulatory, political or similar environment. Considerable and demonstrable expertise in developing significant strategic policy frameworks and a proven track record of developing complex strategic or policy projects and work programmes is required. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to develop an understanding of the legislative framework and the political environment within which the GMC is seeking to modernise medical regulation and the political context in which it works across the four countries of the UK.

This is a significant and influential role and you will bring outstanding interpersonal skills, together with the credibility, personal presence and influencing skills to engage effectively with our many and varied stakeholders. With the ability to build and develop high performing teams and drive fast -paced change, you will play a key ambassadorial role for the GMC. This, together with your keen intellect, vision, credibility and determination to get things done will make you a strong candidate for this uniquely interesting and demanding role.
