Chair of the Board

Job Description

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is a leading professional body working in the public interest to advance knowledge, uphold standards and inspire professionals across the built and natural environment. RICS supports its members, sets qualifications and independently regulates chartered professionals and firms, building trust and confidence in the profession.

We are seeking an exceptional individual to take on the role of Chair of the Board at RICS. As Chair, you will lead the Board in overseeing the delivery of the organisation's strategy and business plan, promoting long-term sustainable success and ensuring RICS delivers value to members while upholding the public interest. Working closely with the Governing Council, Chief Executive and the wider Executive Team, you will provide strategic oversight, effective governance and constructive challenge.

You will lead the effectiveness and development of the Board, including shaping its future composition. You will oversee organisational performance, strategic risks, financial sustainability and delivery of the portfolio of change projects, while providing constructive support and challenge to the Chief Executive. You will foster strong relationships across RICS's governance bodies, respecting their respective responsibilities, particularly those of the Standards and Regulation Board.

Representing RICS externally, you will champion the profession's contribution to society and its influence on policy, education and thought leadership, including on diversity, equity and inclusion, climate action, sustainability and technological change.

The successful candidate will be a RICS member in good standing, with significant non-executive experience, including chairing boards or committees within international organisations and navigating complex governance arrangements. You will bring sound judgement, financial and strategic oversight, experience of organisational change and exceptional relationship-building and influencing skills. A strong commitment to RICS, its members, the public interest and the long-term sustainable success of the Institution is essential, alongside a demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, climate action and sustainability.

The Chair appointment is for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of re-appointment for a further three years, up to a maximum of six years. The role is remunerated at £80,000 per annum; all reasonable expenses reimbursed in line with expenses policy. The anticipated time commitment is approximately 65 days per year.

The Chair is not required to be based in the UK but is expected to attend relevant meetings in person as required, spend time with RICS's Executive Team and employees, and engage with members and other stakeholders.

Applicants must be Chartered RICS members (MRICS or FRICS).
